Porto, Portugal Bakeries?

We are off to Porto tomorrow for a few days.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good bakery to visit and try the local breads?

Oh man, focus on pasteis de nata. We stayed close to this place there last year and it had the best ones we tried - prepared by the daughter of the owner.

And they some weird breads in Portugal, they like to bake stuff into them, like chorizo or ham chunks directly inside... You'll see it in bakeries everywhere.

I do now recall your post from last year, Ted. We did call into Confeitaria do Bolhão and the bread looked great, but it wasn't the right time for us to buy a loaf and we never had time to go back.

Ilya, thanks for putting us on to Cake Market by Maria; we had a great scrambled egg on toast breakfast there, followed by a pasteis, naturally!

One of our favourite restaurants was Taberna dos Fernandes, the only downside being that you had to queue up for half an hour to ensure a place. Still, a glass of excellent Douro reseva wine could be obtained from the wine bar across the alleyway to help pass the time...

Here's a pic of the bread basket we got there:

Rustic looking, almost like homemade breads, and flavoursome. I imagine rye, maize and possibly buckwheat in the ingredient list.

And I brought this home, to have a go at making some kind of broa:
