I intend this post and comments to give Fresh Loafers a heads-up when bread-baking or pizza Kindle ebooks go on sale at Amazon for either heavily discounted prices, up to usually $4.99, or free.
I'll start off with five books that are always (at least have been for a while) free. Three are public domain.
As new books go on sale I will (or you can) add them to the comments. I mostly get these notifications from a service at bookbub.com. The sales usually last from 1 day to a week, so act quickly. Most often the sales run Monday through Sunday. The "tag" with "frog" in it, is so the webmaster can make a few pennies in commission, like his sidebar links.
All the major bread authors have sales, Robertson, Reinhart, Forkish, etc.

This book goes into why and how to use a baking steel versus a baking stone. It also contains recipes for several types of dough, sauces, and pizzas.
I'd say the book is as much about pizza as it is about the pizza-baking steel.
It also has some simple recipes for naan, pita, biscuits and scones.
I have purchased it. If you do not already have Tony Gemignani's (who is a big proponent of baking pizzas on steel) "Pizza Bible", then I would recommend this ebook at the sale price.
If you do already have Tony Gemignani's "Pizza Bible", you don't really need this.

This is a tremendoua deal.
I purchased this at a previous Kindle sale price. I'm a cheap-skate, so I would not have paid full price for the Kindle or the hardcopy.
But at this low price for the Kindle, I think it is a great deal.
It has only one pizza crust dough formula, but many varistions on toppings, plus many Italian recipes besides pizza. Pizza and focaccia is just one section. Italian main dishes and sides make up the rest.

I haven't had a chance to look at it, but you're right it is heavy in the cooking which is totally fine since I don't have any Italian cookbooks. I'm hoping the book will give me some ideas for pizzas.

I have this ebook. The story is moving. The photography is gorgeous and highly professional.
The ratings are: 4.6 out of 5. --- 78% 5-star, and 12% 4-star.
The book's formula for the famous Poilane miche is based on a poolish/starter made with yoghurt, and then commercial yeast is used in the final mix. Some reviewers felt cheated, but others felt it was a legitimate approximation for those who don't want to create and maintain a true sourdough starter.
There are also formulas for rye and barley breads, other baked goods, and non-oven dishes. There is a lot more than just bread.
Personally, I would not pay full list price for the hardcover. But for this price, this is a super deal to have a piece of the Poilâne story, the photos, and recipes for French cuisine.

I think this is a FANTASTIC GREAT deal for a book of this high quality. Detailed, informative, lots of good photos. Focuses on the details of starters as well as the bread formulas.

Not so much "how to cook with spices", but an explanation of various spices, histories, and generalized how-to's.
I wouldn't pay full list price, but I purchased/downloaded it at the sale price, and am very satisfied with the purchase.
The author is the grand-daughter of the founders of the Penzy Spices chain of stores.

Just a note.. I have this book in hardcover and am quite disappointed with it for many reasons. It does not use a consistent reference genre format.. so it's not much use as a reference book. The content is very uneven for different topics. It reads bloggy and not even a good blog... a mix of personal opinions with stuff cribbed from presumably better actual reference books (easy to check the references). And the author presents herself as an authority giving her opinion on things when she is not... she worked the cash register at her relative's spice store. I got the book as part of my dive into spices but would advise skipping it. I really wanted to like it as it was a little gift from my wife but thumbs down.

I usually list books that are only five dollars and under, but this is such a great book for whole wheat bread, geared towards beginning and intermediate bakers alike, and this is the lowest price that I've seen it in two years.
Almost all formulas use commercial yeast, but there is a chapter on using desem sourdough, including how to make a desem starter. (My favorite-tasting starter was a desem whole wheat starter that I purchased from Cultures For Health, and used it as a 100% hydration starter.)
The Amazon prices for used copies of this updated version are through the roof, so I recommend the Kindle. I purchased the paperback edition, updated version, before the pandemic.
If you want to make 100% WW bread, this book is almost a must-have.

Abebooks has inexpensive used copies of Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book for reasonable prices. Abebooks is the first place I check when I'm looking for a book.
It took scrolling through several pages to find the updated edition, but it is there at reasonable prices.

I have the first edition of Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book. Do you think the revisions are significant enough to justify purchasing the updated edition?
I don't have the original edition, so I can't say for sure whether getting the new edition is worth it for someone who already has the first edition.
The updated (2003) edition has gram weights and ml in addition to cups. But I don't know if the original did.
If you pull up the "Look Inside" for the book at 'Zon, you can see the entire table of contents and index, and perhaps see if it would be worth it to you.
The free kindle sample has the ToC and "A Loaf for Learning", but not the index.
Sadly, owned by Amazon, I'm afraid.

It has a really good looking gluten-free seeds and rolled oats loaf.
I like the pizza method: start in a cast iron pan on the stove top and finish under the oven's broiler element.

He's a really good teacher in person, I took a class with him at Grain Gathering in WA. Education was his profession as he got into bread and it shows. It carries over into his book. I agree that it is especially good for newcomers. The language is very casual, which may make this un-intimidating to a new bread baker. Lots of photos too, and many "That's a very good question!" to explain things. Scales to 1, 2 & 4 loaves, metric and volumetric. Includes a chapter on "Sweet Treats"
I bought his book to support him more than any other reason. I should go look at his recipes again. Those whole grain recipes you mention are intriguing.

This is the one that is mostly whole grains and specialty/heirloom grains. Four bucks is a great price for an ebook of this quality.
Robertson's method takes a bit more study than, say, Peter Reinhart's teaching methods, but the effort is worth it.
The photography is superb. When I read this ebook, I knew I had to get the hard-copy.
I realize cookbooks in ebook format are not as handy as a physical book, for all the flipping back and forth you need to do when cooking. But if you're not yet sold on buying a hard-copy of this book, this is an inexpensive way to see if you want to add the physical book to your library.

This is about truely hand-made pasta, with a rolling pin, not a machine roller.
His method uses a lot of table space and a large (long) rolling pin, so it would need adapted for smaller spaces and rolling pins. Some of the negative reviews are from people who apparently aren't amenable to adapting recipes to their kitchen and equipment.
Even if you do end up using a rolling machine, the recipes and cutting/forming techniques may still be worth it.
This book rarely goes on sale this low. (I've been following it for a couple years.) But if you're into making pasta from scratch, I think it is a great deal at 3.

I have done a quick browse through the book. I have not found any recipies using durum flour. However, it does mention using semolina (the gritty stuff) to dust dough to keep it from sticking.
His recommended pasta flour is Caputo 00 Pasta and Gnocchi.

I have the hard-cover edition.
There are only two (similar) dough formulas in the book, but the main draws of the book are the inventive sauces and toppings. Very gourmet and artisan.
There is a chapter on toasts, soups, and salads; and a chapter on desserts.
If you want to take your pizza beyond the normal chain-style red sauce and toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, olives) then this would be a good resource.
