Does anyone have experience with White Lily brand bread flour?

I believe White Lily Flour is available mainly in the South, since I never saw it before we moved here to Tennessee. They offer a range of flours, and one type is unbleached "bread" flour, but it doesn't give much helpful information on the package. I'm just beginning my "adventures in flour", and was wondering if any of you have used it and could offer any guidance.  It seems like a good value right now - 5lbs for about $2.00, but not if it doesn't make good bread.

Jan, haven't used it, but it looks fine from here. Let us know how it turns out.

Jan,

Their products are very good.  You should have no problem with the results.

Although, the Co. was bought out by Smucker a couple of years ago and will close the mill in Knoxville, TN at the end of June and move the operation to Toledo.  It was founded 125 years ago in Knoxville and they had strick tolerances in their products.  Don't know if it will remain that way.  Good Luck!

Jan I have used it for a couple years now. Mostly the AP flour for biscuits and sorts. It is a good flour. Since I bake more breads now I haven't been buying as  much.

Thanks for all the information. I have used other White Lily products and thought the quality was fine, including the self rising flour, which was another Southern thing that was new to me when we moved to Tennessee.

I've been reading a lot of the posts about differences in types of flour, and recommended flours, and then trying to fit what's available here into the whole picture. Local sources are very limited, although WM does have KA, but very limited choices of other flours. We do have a Mennonite community nearby, and they have a pretty good selection of baking supplies, but the prices are high - Bouncer flour is currently $1.60lb.

So I'm going to try the White Lily flour and report back, since it's readily available, and reasonably priced.

Jan,

I can't say that I've tried making bread with White Lily yet, but it is the very best flour I've found for buttermilk biscuits. Light, flaky, lovely hot biscuits on a saturday morning with some of my Stumptown coffee stash...

Now I'll have to make some for breakfast tomorrow!

And you'll also have to send us all your address and the time breakfast will be ready!  I really like it for biscuits too,  and can also recommend their  white corn meal.
