March 19th. A day to wear Red! A toast to all foster fathers! Actually there are a lot of St Joseph bread recipes out there. Most recipes for the day are encouraged to use bread crumbs as they resemble saw dust commonly seen with carpenters. :)
No baking for me yesterday. However, I did make a pilgrimage to the best pastry shop in Manhattan! Rocco's.
Pasta Sardi is out of the question, my wife would not eat that.
My eldest brother is Joseph (RIP) He was sickly as a child (born in an Italian Concentration camp.) That is another story. I can still hear my mom's voice in my head when I think about her praying in Maltese to Saint Joseph. Smile... Do you have any formulas for Saint Joseph bread? I think it is about time I made some. I am a bit sad this morning. I posted in my FB Maltese food group yesterday the photo of the pastries, and why the day is special to me. (Mom praying) The post received over 30 likes and a few positive comments. One person asked that it should be taken down due to religious content. Don't you know the admin. took the post down! I became FB friends with the group owner, I post a lot of relevant Maltese cooking content. While I felt I had to leave the group, I will keep the owner on my friends' list. Sorry to vent to you Mini. Happy Saint Joseph's day!
Obviously the one objecting to religious content missed the important parts. Gee, if every post that used "OMG" was taken down... (it is also a prayer.) It is so human that in times of dispair, we pray. Praying is a good way to relieve stress especially when stress can be overwhelming. I will pray for them, the zappers. You can too, we can reap the benefits of prayer. I can pray for you too if it helps. (You can't stop me, it's already done.) :) Sorry you lost your brother. My older brother also carries Joseph in his name. It's a good name.
The holiday has only recently come to my attention. Saint Joseph feasts include bread crumbs, not necessarily as an ingredient in bread. Certainly no one celebrating this day will make a fuss about getting crumbs all over the cutting board and table. Although I seem to recall that rolling dough in bread crumbs before the final proof (not for St Joseph) has been interesting and so has a crackle like crust on loaves. Graham cracker crust is also a favourite. Crumbs and parmesan cheese together as a baked on topping....over veggies, noodle type dishes...oh dear...imagination going into overtime. (Must be hungry.) Because the day falls on Friday during Lent, often it is a meatless Catholic holiday. (Maybe not in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as it is shoved to a Saturday.) Some religions celebrate it twice a year. Fava beans are symbolic, ask a Sicilian.
