Mockmill with a Hobart N-50?
Does anybody know if a Mockmill will work with an N-50? ...Obviously an N50 will power it, but what I want to know is if the flour chute will funnel the flour into the bowl of an N50 the same way it will on a KitchenAid mixer.
Hi, I own both and the chute does not line up with the bowl..it is a bit short. I remove the bowl from the mixer and hold it under the chute..or I use a different bowl. A small price to pay for a wonderful attachment for my mixer!
Thank you very much! I thought it might be a bit short, but I don't have a KA mixer to compare. It doesn't matter though. I ordered a Mockmill a couple days ago. Couldn't resist :) ...And I thought of an easy clip-on chute extender I can make. Might even make a whole new one and have it chromed. We'll see. I'm just excited to be getting the/a mill ^^
another option is to use the pouring shield on the bowl. I have an older 2 piece one, and it worked great!
That is an excellent idea! Thank you. I have a couple questions though. I was looking for a stainless spiral dough hook, and in my research I found out that KitchenAid bowls and N50 bowls are a little different. So, will a KitchenAid pour shield fit on the bowl of an N50? Does Hobart make a pour shield? ...Also, my mixer is actually a KitchenAid model G, and the lip on the bowl is a little different than a standard N50 bowl. ...If a pour shield won't fit properly I'll just go with my first idea and either make a chute extension or a whole new chute for the Mockmill..

...Umm, sorry about that celebrity picture. I don't know where the heck that came from. I don't even have any pics like that on my PC. The link is supposed to be a picture of my mixer. Is there any way I can delete it?
Lets try that link again http://oi64.tinypic.com/2h2jdqu.jpg
Ok that worked. So WTF? lol.
Now I'll try embedding it again and see what happens

Shoot, I never got to see the "celebrity" photo! Lol! But your kitchenaid is da bomb! My Hobart is newer..maybe around 25 yrs old...I purchased it on eBay and it has the kitchenaid bowl so no lip...You know, you could try purchasing one of the pour shields on Amazon, and if it doesn't fit it should be easy to return it. Just on another note..when I used the Mockmill, I put it on speed 2...I haven't tried speed 3. I think speed 1 is too slow...it ground effortlessly and I own a heat gun and the flour wasn't warm at all! I love this grain mill...I'll bet you do too!
It's still on my screen, big as life lol. I figured out what happened. TinyPic gave me a link with one letter missing. One takes you to the mixer pic and the other takes you to a pic of who I assume is a celebrity. It looks like that kind of picture anyways.

Anyways, thanks for the Amazon idea. I'll check that out after the mill arrives and I decide what I want to do (should be tomorrow). I was also thinking about running it in second gear. Third gear runs smooth, but I don't want to run the old beast that hard. At least not very often. I'll be using the mill every day so second gear seems like a good choice.
@Fyrcat (cool name BTW), I'm just curious, what did you pay for your N50? What shape was it in? Did it come with any attachments besides the KA bowl? ...I've been following the eBay listings for N50s and model Gs for a couple years now. It's always kind-of interesting to see what they sell for. This is the first chance I've had to find out from a buyer what their mixer is like and what quirks it might have. ...I got lucky with my model G. All the gears look like new. All I had to replace was the electrical cord and change the grease (be careful, people will try to sell you NLGI #0 grease, claiming it's for all commercial Hobart mixers. I got suckered because the NLGI rating wasn't listed in the description).
Oh BTW, if anybody is curios about the little wrench that's hanging off the attachment screw. That came with a set of valve stem caps I bought for my truck. The wrench just happens to be 1/2 inch, which makes it perfect for removing the drive shaft from the roto-cones on the shredder attachment. Very convenient..and it has a cat paw on it, so it's perfect for me =^.^=
i really like the mockmill..I have a Samap 100 as well, and I may end up selling it as the N-50 and the mockmill is such a great setup!
hey there.. I just got a model G to restore.. i was hoping you could give me some tips you learned through your experience.
Sure. What do you want to know?
The model G is almost exactly like a modern Hobart N-50, inside. So basically any N-50 service manual will help you with taking it apart, re-greasing it, and adjusting the gears if it needs it. I can tell you what grease I used if you like? And I do have a couple little tips for you. When it's time to take off the gearbox, if it's stuck or painted shut, put a towel on top of the attachment hub and give it a whack with a hammer. That will loosen it so you can wiggle the thing off. DO NOT overgrease it. I've read some things here that say to fill it up. That is wrong! I'll explain why if you want. ...A model G specific tip is, if you're rewiring it with a new plug, when you go to put the fuze holder (whatever it's called lol) back on, do not overtighten the screws! The plastic is hard, brittle and will crack with a little too much pressure. Mine did. Fortunately it didn't actually break. These mixers were not originally grounded, but you can easily attach a ground wire to one of the screws that holds the hole cover that's under the base, if you want. ..I hope that made sense lol. As for the motor, mine ran great when I got it so I never took it apart to check the brushes or commutator. It is starting to sound a bit 'motory' now though, so I'll probably take it apart soon. I do know where I can have brushes made for it though. So if you need brushes, let me know.
That's all I can think of right now. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Oh uh, try to find a manual for an older N-50 that has the same kind of gear selector as your model G. That's what I got, and the diagrams look exactly the same as Model G parts. A newer N-50 gear selector might mean that that part is a bit different inside. It shouldn't matter much either way, but still *shrugs*
