Another Type of Baking Mat

In a previous book, we had a small craft business involving a lot of sewing. We bought an Olfa self-healing cutting mat, which worked so well we bought several. We also tried several other brands, some from Walmart, others from Hobby Lobby and so forth. The Olfa never scarred and held up under some heavy-duty work. We were always using razor blades and rotary cutting wheels (also razor blades).

When I got to this life, I'd kept one of the 24"x36" mats because they're useful for a lot of things. I needed something to put on the counter for measuring, cutting and rolling dough. Tried this and it worked wonderfully.

These mats are designed for sewing crafts, so one side has all the measurements you'd want (other than circles, for pies and things), imprinted on the material. The other side is plain.

Well shoot...I just did an Amazon check, and they're seem to be disappearing. I did see one for $60, which is a lot more than we paid for ours. However; I thought I'd post this.

Fiskars makes one, and there are other brands I don't recognize that are "self-healing." I would imagine that as long as they're soft, rubber-ish material, they wouldn't skid around on the counter. And making bread isn't anywhere near as destructive as cutting hundreds of yards of fabric.

You save the countertop, and can cut with a bench-cutter or a knife. And they clean up easily with just a bit of soapy water. Passin' it on.

Olfa website (Olfa.com) states the 24x36 cutting mat is discontinued. They do have other sizes.

My dad taught me, many years ago, that as soon as you say outloud that something is great....it vanishes forever. Discontinued!

Oh well; I like the self-healing mat, and I particularly like the 24x36" size. I would suppose there are other brands out there, so something for anyone interested to consider. Better than those rolled up plastic or silicon mats, in my opinon. :-)
