Glass-and-Oat-Topped San Joaquin Sourdough

25 hours of work was destroyed when a stray spray of water came into contact with my oven light, causing it to explode and garnish my loaf with shards of glass. Being a true nerd, I continued baking to see how it would turn out.

You have to see how it turns out! And in this case, it turned out beautifully - quite a loss to have to trash it. So sorry to hear of the shattered bulb.

Although the crust is my favorite part of my breads, I'd only discard the glassy crust off this one and keep the rest. It can still taste wonderful!

The loaf really got hit hard by the glass. You can't really see it in the picture, but I wouldn't have felt safe eating it. Even if you only swallow one piece of glass, that's the kind of thing about which they write death metal songs.

Good thing the glass shrapnel didn't escape the oven. What a pain to clean up and have to replace.  One trick for removing a broken bulb is to jam a potato into the broken bulb and then turn the potato and broken bulb altogether.  Q-Tips to run around the empty socket to get out the broken bit of glass and probably damp paper towels to clean out the oven of any shards.

That was a fine looking loaf.  For the life of me, i have no idea why people spray water into their ovens in the first place, since It doesn't hardly make any steam at all anyway.   Way better to use Sylvia's steaming pans and David's lava rock streaming pan to make Mega Steam.  Your loaves will be much better in the end and the oven light won't explode.

Happy baking

If you suffered an unfortunate consequence as a result, you had it coming.

mixinator, I agree. I'd have it coming. But, I'd take the chance rather than waste a whole loaf of bread. I can't imagine a glass bulb shattering with such force as to fill the entire loaf with shards. Of course, I'd check for glass pieces before eating it, not just assume it's safe because "I cut the top off". I may be brave, but I ain't that stupid!
