Bran Flakes

So I have Dan Lepaird's Baking With Passion and I was going to make a WW sandwich bread from it but I ran int a snag.  In the recipe it calls for bran flakes so my question is this, and I know this is a silly one but I do not know the answer so here goes, what do they mean by bran flakes? is it just a cereal or is there something else again I'm sure this is simple so humor me.  I did post this same question at the forum on Lepaird's site but noone has responded in 2 days so I hope someone here can help.

JIP - Bran Flakes in a bread recipe would not be refering to the processed breakfast cereal variety that contains other ingredients, but rather to the actual outer hull, or bran, of the whole wheat berry.  I don't have Lepard's book, but I asume this is what is being refered to. You can get 100% bran flakes (minus the rest of the germ/flour) at most grocery and health food stores, probably in the baking or cereal isles. If you happen to have coarse or stone ground 100% whole wheat flour on hand, you can fine sift the bran flakes right out of the flour and use them, they are the brown flecks one sees in the WW flour. Once you have sifted the bran flakes out of that WW flour, however, you just altered that flour's characteristic so it is now a sifted or extracted wheat flour and no longer whole wheat, keep that in mind if you want to re-use the sifted flour in another recipe. Hope that helps...
