Color of Whole Wheat Berries

We have a wonderful coop in town. They have a pretty good selection of organic grains and flours for baking, some at very reasonable prices.

One of the grains I buy from them are their "Organic Red Spring Wheat Berries". Their supplier is Mouintain Mama Natural Foods in Colorado Springs:  http://www.mountainmamanaturalfoods.com/

According to the website, they are not a grower, but source them locally. I've never bought wheat berries anywhere else, so I need a reality check as to their quality.

As you can see in the pic, there are quite a few green-colored berries. Is this normal? If I were to buy a bag of red wheat berries from another supplier, would I find the same thing?

The green ones are rye berries. You can separate them from the sample and find out what is the % of rye that they sell you in your wheat. There is other extraneous material there as well, in that photo.

Some suppliers sell cleaned out and sorted out wheat, ready for milling, others don't.

Interesting, thank you.

Based on your comment, I decided to write Mountain Mama and see what they have to saty about it.

Would sure be tedious to pick them all out.

I incorrectly ID'ed "Mountain Mama Natural Foods" in Colo Springs, CO as our coop's wheat berry supplier.

In fact it is "Mountain Mama Milling" in Monte Vista, CO .They do not appear to have a website.
