Hobart A200 Rebuild

I'm tearing down my wife's A200 and cleaning up the transmission box so I can replace the grease.  It has never worked in 2nd gear and I was hoping to find the reason why but the transmission looks fine.  Any suggestions why 2nd gear is not working?

Thanks,

Larry

What type of grease to put in gear box?  Hobart grease is about 250.00 (ouch).  Is there something else I can use?

Hello

Sorry to see no responses to your post,

I think I can answer some of your questions.

I have the same problem on a AE200 with the 2nd gear not working.  All I have read suggest it may be either, the nut on the bottom connecting the planetary unit to the case is too tight, or the gear selector gear has been inserted upside down on the selector shaft.

With respect to grease Hobart recommends  Texaco Multifak FM2 which is expensive and needs a Kg in the gearbox/transmission and 50gm in the planetary.  Molyslip make a food grade NlGI 2 grease called arvina that is quite a lot cheaper and has a similar specification to the Multifak.  Molyslip tech department recommended that the old grease is completely removed to avoid contamination.  This needs washing of the bearings and gears.

I have stripped my uit down and started stripping the paint which is rusted/chipped......when in a cloud of dust I thought "this machine is at lest 50 years old and may have lead in the paint".  So I am now searching for info on that

I will order a swab to check for lead and make some progress again next week I hope.

Tell us more o your journey please.

Best wishes,

Christopher

oldhobartparts recommends Mobil XHP 222 special to grease the A200 (source: https://www.oldhobartmixerparts.com/a120-a200-mixer-grease/Hobart-A120-A200-Mixer-Recommended-XHP-222-Grease.html).

Note the 'special' which means it contains 0.75% molybdenum - although it's not entirely clear whether it's the 'special' variant in the photo on that page, they say 'special' in the text.

I couldn't get the 'special' version easily locally (without buying a 200kg drum) - the XHP 222 regular is very easy to get. So went with another brand's equivalent - Penrite Molygrease EP 3%.

You'll need about 1kg (3 x 400g tubes).

Seems to working just fine in my A200.

Tks for the update on the grease issue.
My machine is still in pieces.  I did get test kit for the paint to see if it had lead present.  I concluded it does not  but still took the precaution of getting a good mask to reduce the inhalation of dust.

When I contacted Hobart to ask about the paint used when the model was made I got no assistance.  They were unwilling to say what had been used.  It suggests that sometimes they may have used lead based compounds and sometimes not.

it will be a while till I have my workshop built to a state where I can rebuild the mixer (have moved house).  Will post more when I am back on the project.

Good Morning everyone,

I just picked up a A200 that needs some love.  It runs well, but needs to be cleaned up.  I am attempting to take it apart to replace the lubricant and repaint the machine.  I am having issues removing the drip ring that sits over the planetary.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can remove it without destroying  it.

Thank you
