Gilding the lily

Believe it or not, Floyd's Sweet Potato Rolls can be made even better.  And I wouldn't even have known that but for a bit of Thanksgiving serendipity.

My youngest daughter and family had been in town for a visit the weekend prior to Thanksgiving.  For one of our meals, she made Elizabeth Karmel's Sweet Potato Bourbon Mash.  Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite things and they play very nicely with a bit of bourbon.  Needless to say, the dish was delicious!

A few days later, I was planning to take some rolls to our older daughter's home for Thanksgiving dinner and decided that the sweet potato rolls would be in keeping with the day.  As luck would have it, there was about 3/4 of a cup of the sweet potato bourbon mash left over; just the perfect amount for the rolls.

The dough came together nicely and the rolls baked up prettily, filling the house with their fragrance.  They tasted even better than they smelled!  As our daughter put it after taking a bite, "It's like Thanksgiving in your mouth!"

So, if you feel the need for a bit of self-indulgence, I'd highly recommend this.   In effect, you get a two-for-one deal, since the sweet potato mash is worth doing in its own right.

It sure sounds good Paul.  We love those sweet potato rolls anyway, and something to make them better is always welcome.

I've never had the mash you refer to.  For that matter, I don't think I have ever have had any other mash of sweet potatoes.  I'm going to have to suggest this, and perhaps give it a try when my daughter is home at Christmas.  We have a tradition over the last couple of years of baking some bread together at least once when she is home.  This sounds like a great item for the list of possibilities.  Maybe I can even get her to make the mash for us.

Thanks

Since you already like the rolls, you and your daughter may well want to add this variation to your list of things to bake.  Enjoy your time together and the bread, too!

Paul,

Your rolls sound heavenly.  That recipe for the mash is nice in it's simplicity too.

I baked the same recipe of Floyd's  but did it with sourdough instead of yeast and I added fresh dates...a very nice dough to work with and it made very cute rolls too. The added spices added an very nice touch.

My son loves pumpkin pie so I thought he would love this but he is into dieting these days.....wants a 6-pack....so he is trying to avoid my bread.....(While eating chips, chocolate, cookies etc.....good old teenage logic....don't eat the healthy stuff so you can eat more unhealthy stuff..... Some things never change.)  :-)

Nice to know these good basic recipes can withstand our curiousity and apparently innate desire to toss 'whatever' into the mix!

Thanks for your idea and the recipe.

The notion of adding dates probably wouldn't have occurred to me.  But now that you mention it, maybe some figs, or some raisins, or some currants, or ...

Teen logic is interesting, isn't it?  And you are right that some things seem not to change.  Have you broken the news to him that a 6-pack has less to do with dieting and more to do with exercise?

It's a very nice ingredient to add to chili, stews and other dishes, but I never thought of using it with sweet potatoes.  Or bread.

Sounds fantastic, Paul.   I've got all the ingredients and will certainly make the mash since it sounds so wonderful.  Hopefully there will be enough left over to try it with the rolls!

Thanks for the link and the tip.

And if you think the mash sounds interesting, just google "bourbon sweet potato".  You'll be amazed at the list of possibilities.  Everything from souffles to milkshakes to bread pudding and beyond.  Who knew that two ingredients could be parlayed into so many dishes?

LOL, I did.   5,680,000 results.  That's a lot of bourbon.

Hello Paul,
Bourbon sounds like a great addition to your mash, and also to your rolls. Thanks so much for the idea!
Usually I only use bourbon in eggnog spike, so it will be nice to try some in that Sweet Potato Mash;
it sure sounds good.

of rum, but I might be convinced to make an exception for that mixture.  Thanks for the tip.

Hi Paul,
If you make this, I hope you like it!
Thanks for your post, which reminded me of this concoction - just mixed some up in preparation for Christmas.
(The aroma of the nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and cloves is heavenly and the spices infuse this mixture with flavor in such a nice way!)
